Sean Gibbons provides update on potential Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz vs Ryan Garcia fight
Betway spoke with promoter and manager Sean Gibbons on January 16th, who teased a possible showdown between WBC #2 Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz and Ryan Garcia in April.
A former light-heavyweight during the 80s and 90s, the American promoter / manager / matchmaker took time to provide an update on whether the Cruz-Garcia fight will take place and also discussed the thriving super-lightweight division, taking time to display his displeasure of WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
Here's what the American had to say:
What are the chances of Isaac Cruz facing Ryan Garcia next?
SG: "Ryan Garcia for two years has called out Isaac Cruz, talked s*** about him and talked about Cruz ducking people but Ryan should know more than anyone, boxing is a business.
"You’re fighting for a prize, to entertain people but to get paid. Everybody knows along the way it’s about timing and all of sudden things have lined up perfectly. We come to the realisation that Manny Pacquiao wants to see Isaac Cruz fight Ryan Garcia, Floyd Mayweather wants Ryan Garcia to fight Rolly Romero, but the fight that needs to be made is Ryan vs Pitbull. Styles make fights.
"A lot of good discussions have happened between everybody, and we hope something comes out of it. April is the month that Ryan is returning to the ring and Pitbull is ready, he is training and is good to go. It’s not about titles or weight class, it’s about fights people want to see."
How exciting is it at 140?
"Everybody is going up to fight at 140 aside from Shakur Stevenson, somebody nobody wants to watch. I don’t care what weight he’s at, he’s got a boring, ugly, terrible style you’ll see. Cruz and Rolly would be a great fight too, forget about that previous fight Cruz had, that was my fault. I take all the blame for putting him in with an awful style of boxing. But that’s what happen when you fight stinky fighters. At the end of the day, we won’t make that mistake again, we want to make exciting fights.
"In 2024, we can’t wait anymore as he hasn’t had a signature fight since Gervonta Davis two years ago. We got ridiculed for turning Shakur down, but we did the fans a favour, thank God we turned the fight down as it would’ve been a bad fight and not because of us. We can’t get Vasyl Lomachenko or George Kambosos Jr so we are focused on either Rolly Romero or Ryan Garcia next. We would fight either in a heartbeat.
"Isaac Cruz has one of the biggest Hispanic followings in boxing. It's either Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez or Isaac Cruz that crosses over to the Hispanic market and we know Ryan Garcia has a huge crossover following too outside of boxing so it has all of the makings of a huge fight."
