Background
Manchester's Lyndon Arthur finally realises his dream world title shot at the vacant IBO belt against Argentina’s dangerous Braian Nahuel Suarez, live on terrestrial TV.
The former WBO Intercontinental and Commonwealth Champion, who defeated Anthony Yarde in 2021, can become the first Englishman to claim the IBO World Light Heavyweight Title, and join a prestigious list of champions to have held the belt including Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson and Roy Jones Jr. Irishman Padraig McCrory was the last holder of the IBO 175lbs title.
‘King’ Arthur got his shot following back-to-back stoppage wins in March, but was forced to fight Boris Crighton instead, knocking him down in the 10th and winning via UD. The 31-year-old had scored a sixth-round TKO victory over Walter Gabriel Sequeira in September before defeating English champion Joel McIntyre in spectacular fashion inside the second round of their December bout.
30-year-old Argentine Braian Nahuel Suarez is a WBA Fedebol light-heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, ranked 37th with the IBO. He will represent a dangerous challenge to 11th ranked Arthur with 17 knockouts from 18 victories. Find out more about Suarez HERE
Quotes
Lyndon Arthur: “Suarez is a good fighter who has good power and I’m excited to see what he brings. My focus is only on Suarez and winning the IBO title. After Friday night, I will speak about those other fights that have been mentioned."
Braian Suarez: “I am so thankful for this opportunity, and I will do everything in my hands to bring the victory home to Argentina. I hope to win by KO, but the priority is just to win. Like every boxer, Arthur has weaknesses. I am not going to tell you what they are, but I am going to take advantage of them.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Both fighters are heavy handed so this is going to be fireworks! The odds for a draw at 25/1 means no one is expecting this to go the distance. They are so evenly matched on paper, each with high KO counts, as well as both sharing a knockout defeat on their records. Suarez is tough and rugged and likes to fight up close to slam in hooks to body and head which he does so well and with plenty of pop. If he gets knocked down, he gets back up again, so he won't give up easily. I do believe that Arthur has fought at a higher level to Suarez and I hope to see him use his range and skill to keep his opponent in the positions he wants him to be in to break him down over time and win this fight by knockout. If this happens, I'd imagine the KO will come after quite a few rounds, in the second half of the contest.”
