Welsh duo Williams and Lockett back together again
World title contender Liam Williams (23-4-1, 18KO) has returned home to his native Wales to train with his old coach, Gary Lockett.
45-year-old Lockett trained the Welshman known as 'The Machine' from his pro debut in 2011 to his first defeats in 2018, which were back to back losses to Liam Smith, albeit their first fight ending in controversy when a headbutt caused a severe cut to Williams' eye, forcing Lockett to withdraw his man in the 10th despite being ahead on the scorecards.
The Clydach Vale boxer shared the news on his socials on September 21, "Just Wanted to inform you (for those who care) that I am now back training with my former coach @thelockettman. Back in Wales where I belong and where I am happy."
Lockett guided Williams, a product of the Rhondda Amateur Boxing Club, to British and Commonwealth titles.
The 30-year-old, who hasn't fought since defeat to Chris Eubank Jr in February, also revealed his next fight plans, "We will see you in December when I am under the lights again! Full announcement to come soon. Thank you to everyone for the continued support. I promise I have so much more to come, keep following the journey."
Locket is a former professional boxer himself, winning 30 from 32 bouts, with 21 KOs, so was heavy-handed too. He challenged Kelly Pavlik for his unified middleweight titles (WBC, WBO, Ring) in 2008 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but was pulled out by his corner, Enzo Calzaghe, in round three.
As a trainer, he has worked with Gavin Rees, Enzo Maccarinelli, Nick Blackwell, Jay Harris, Maxi Hughes and Chris Jenkins.
Promoter Frank Warren is expected to reveal details of the December event shortly.
