Background
Liverpool’s Liam Smith shocked the world in January by becoming he first man to ever stop Chris Eubank Jr., just one minute and nine seconds into the fourth round of their grudge match.
Former world champion Smith came up a weight class to challenge cocky Eubank Jr, and may have taken the greatest victory of his professional career to date.
Brighton boxer Eubank had looked comfortable in the first three rounds, boxing fluidly, landing multiple shots and almost showboating, with trainer Roy Jones Jr. looking on from his corner.
However, Smith got a talking to from Joe McNally in the corner after round three and came out forcefully in the fourth to catch Junior with a clubbing right hook that forced him to retreat to the corner where the Liverpudlian launched a rapid flurry of punches, opening his rival up to an inch-perfect uppercut, followed by a left hook to the temple that sent him crashing to the canvas heavily.
The former IBO world champion bravely rose to his feet to beat the referee’s count of 10, despite being dazed and unbalanced, but a few more perfectly selected punches from Smith forced the fight to be stopped.
Eubank’s ego was badly bruised while Smith’s stock rose to an all-time high. Now they prepare to do it all over again but will it be a repeat for Smith or revenge for Eubank?
Quotes
Liam Smith: “Chris Eubank Jr doesn’t beat me so this is the end of the Smith vs Eubank Jr thing. I’ve got to expect something different from Chris because if I get the same Chris, I’ll wipe the floor with him.”
Ben Shalom: “The rivalry between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr has quickly become one of the most heated in British boxing. Their January fight was one of the most exciting encounters in BOXXER history. We’re expecting tickets to fly out for September 2nd at the AO Arena as fans rush to be ringside for what is guaranteed to be another unbelievable firefight.”
Kalle Sauerland: “Good things come to those who wait, and so the postponements will only make victory that bit sweeter for Chris, when he finally meets Liam Smith on September 2. Chris has had to remain patient and disciplined but what has been clear, in our conversations over the last few weeks and months, is that he is laser-focused on setting the record straight. Chris is going to deliver an electric performance.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “It’s a fight that’s almost impossible to predict even though we have seen them in the ring together already, so that should give us a good idea. However, there’s lots of questions on who will do what in the rematch. Smith will likely be the same, but will Eubank come back improved under new trainer Brian McIntyre and not the fight so lightly this time? He was in cruise control in the first fight but didn’t respect Smith’s skills or power, showboating as he repeatedly landed flashy uppercuts. It’s why he decided to try to look good dodging his punches in the corner instead of covering up to protect himself or firing back in defence. He was too cocky, tried to showboat, didn’t respect Smith’s power, got caught cold and paid the price.
“This time, he won’t be doing the same; he will be on his toes, sharp, keeping the distance and looking to even the score. I’d imagine Eubank will keep the fight long. Smith now knows how to hurt Eubank so his confidence will be higher than ever, but he has always had a dogged determination and high self-belief. However, he will have a harder time getting close to Eubank in the rematch and an even harder time getting his shots to land on the target. So it’s very interesting, I think Eubank could box clever to gain a points decision or Smith could apply the pressure to stop him again. Smith is fighter that doesn’t stop coming forward and the longer the fight goes on, the more stubborn and relentless he becomes. Keeping someone as skilled and strong as Smith away for 12 rounds is a hard ask.
“Eubank may take the earlier rounds when boxing on the outside, but Smith should come on stronger with each passing round. Very hard to predict, but I’ll pick Smith to win via stoppage again, but in the later rounds from 10-12.”
