Liam Smith heads to Russia on May 8 to face Magomed Kurbanov
‘Beefy’ vs ‘Black Lion’
Liam Smith has a big fight coming up as he will take on undefeated Magomed Kurbanov in Ekaterinburg on Saturday, May 8.
Former WBO super-welterweight world champion Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith (29-2-1, 16KOs) will travel to Russia for the fight with Magomed ‘Black Lion’ Kurbanov (21-0, 13KOs), with the WBO International super-welterweight title also on the line.
32-year-old ‘Beefy’ was last in action in December 2019, as he defeated Roberto Garcia by unanimous decision in Phoenix, Arizona. It was his third win in a row, following stoppage victories over Mario Alberto Lozano and Sam Eggington earlier in the year.
His only defeats came at the hands of Canelo in 2016, losing his WBO super-welterweight world title to the Mexican in the process; then he was outpointed by Jaime Munguia in 2018 when trying to win the belt back.
Kurbanov has won all 21 of the fights in his career, with the most recent of those coming in November 2020, where he stopped Dmitry Mikhaylenko in just two rounds. The 25-year-old Russian held this belt back twice before in 2017, then again in 2019. German ‘Golden’ Jack Culcay was the previous owner, but has vacated for Smith and Kurbanov to battle for the belt.
Liam Smith is WBO #3 and Magomed Kurbanov currently at #6. The winner will likely face the new WBO 154lbs champion Brian Carlos Castano (17-0-1, 12KOs) next. The Argentinian outpointed Patrick Teixeira in February this year to win the title.
