Lenny Fuller reveals his secret to being a busy pro after four fights in six months
Maidstone’s Lenny Fuller, signed to JE Promotions, has raced to 4-0 in the space of six months and will be back out for his fifth pro contest and first six-rounder early next year.
The 24-year-old from Chart Sutton in Kent has fought four times already in May, September, October and November, and is now readying for his next fight on February 23 at Mote Park in Maidstone on JE Promotions’ nine-fight card – ‘Unleashed’.
Fuller, a former unlicensed boxing champion, revealed his secret for fighting regularly: “Just get a good following and a fan base for selling tickets. If I can do 100 tickets at one show, then I’ll hold some back and try not to push it too hard, so I can keep some back for the next show.
“Sometimes I’ll use the money I get from one show to use for my next fight, so it’s like I invest in the future and think ahead for the next one.”
A former amateur boxer at Westry ABC, Fuller won titles in the IBA, EBA, UKBC unlicensed scene and boxed in the Queensbury League before turning pro with manager Joe Elfidh.
“My following has built up from the unlicensed scene and they came over into the pros with me. A lot of people like the unlicensed shows because they’re that little bit unrulier, they can have a piss up and the atmosphere is buzzing! It all helps to build up a big following. There’s a lot more 50-50 fights in unlicensed, believe it or not, they [boxers] don’t care about records, they just want to go at it!”
Fuller made the transition from unlicensed to professional boxing seamlessly on May 12 at Mote Park with a 40-35 points win over Dale Arrowsmith (1-15-1), flooring the six-footer in the process.
“Probably the biggest difference is the quality of opponents,” he explained. “The hardest fight I had was at the York Hall show in my third fight, I caught Kevin McCauley with big shots but he didn’t go anywhere. Sometimes you have to change your tactics and box and think.”
Trained by Lee Page at the Combat Sports Academy, Fuller proffered advice to boxers turning over, "Just market yourself right and always think about investing in the future, get busy, get around different gyms and get yourself noticed."
Fuller next fights on February 23 at Mote Park, Maidstone on JE Promotions' 'Unleashed' event which also features former Southern Area champion Grant Dennis in the headliner.
