Back to winning ways for 'Main Man' Lenny Fuller
Maidstone’s Lenny Fuller moved up to 9-1 in his first fight back since tasting defeat for the only time against Rio 2016 Olympian Steven Donnelly (7-0) in the Ultimate Boxxer super-welterweights finals in September.
The ‘Gypsy Warrior’ defeated MJ Hall (2-46-2) comfortably on points, scored at 40-36, at Mote Park on November 3 on an MTK Global show headlined by the Southern Area super-featherweight title fight between Danny Carr (11-0-1) and Lewis Adams (8-0-1).
Smiling from his corner, the self-assured Fuller matched his southpaw opponent’s stance for the first half of the round before switching back his normal orthodox style. It was an uneventful start, but Fuller did land an eye-catching left hook to the head of Hall in the last 30 seconds, which spurred him on to throw a few combinations, which the West Midlander managed to avoid mostly.
In the second round, Fuller came out standing orthodox but then abruptly switched to southpaw and was rewarded with a clean right hook to his counterpart’s chin.
Fuller continued to switch hit, seemingly looking to use the rounds for experience; unhurried and controlled.
He was really enjoying himself in the fourth and final round, with fancy footwork and lots of close punches landing frequently but unweighty.
A good straight right landed on Hall’s head one minute in and enthused Fuller to try to land another, but his opponent didn’t want more and dutifully moved his head the next time.
There was a bit of a shootout midway through the last round as Fuller landed several right hoks and uppercuts. An overhand right from Hall landing flush on Fuller’s left side enthused the Maidstone man to jump in closer and trade blows. A good body shot from Fuller found the midsection of Hall when in close, but it was clear he wasn’t going anywhere.
The pair finished the fight entangled, which was an energetic contest in parts, but failed to really ignite at any point, largely due to Fuller’s apparent want to practise what he’s been trying out in the gym.
Fuller banked his ninth win from 10 contests and will be back in action at Mote Park on Boxing Connected’s February 29 show next year. However, the busy boxer who’s banked 10 fights in 18 months will likely be back in the ring again before then.
The talented 25-year-old from Chart Sutton was one of eight 154-pounders to reach the final of the fast-paced, action-packed BT Sport event by scoring the quickest KO of the tournament within 32 seconds in the opening fight, followed by a unanimous points decision over unbeaten Kingsley Egbunike (4-0) in the semi’s, to meet former Olympian Steven Donnelly in the final.
Former Westry ABC student Fuller, trained by Lee Page, debuted on May 12, 2018 against Dale Arrowsmith (1-15-1), flooring him en route to a shutout points victory. The likeable boxer recorded another five points wins, all within one year, to take his tally into the tournament to 6-0.
Opponents faced were all the usual suspects, but he did give himself a tough assignment in his second pro bout against Central Area title contender Chris Jenkinson (10-57-3), conceding a round in the process to the vaster experienced fighter.
The former unlicensed boxing champion from Chart Sutton in Kent confesses to not achieving a lot in the amateurs due to a lack of dedication, but made up for it by winning several titles in the local unlicensed scene.
Danny Carr was crowned the new Southern Area super-featherweight champion after shining as the headliner on the sold out #MTKFightNight show.
Although both title hopefuls entered the headline act unbeaten as professionals, the popular ‘Cannon’ had too much for former amateur rival Lewis Adams and was awarded a 96-95 decision.
Elsewhere on the card, talented super-lightweight southpaw Martin McDonagh bounced back from a Southern Area title final eliminator defeat with an assured schooling of Lee Connelly.
There were also victories for other emerging local stars in Bradley Haxell, Jack Ewbank and James Hawley.
