Leigh Wood optimistic his next fight will take place at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground
Two-time world champion Leigh Wood (28-3, 17KO) appears to be in high hopes, as he is optimistic his next fight will take place at his beloved Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.
'Leigh-thal' Wood is expected to face off against Josh Warrington in a rematch after he managed to emerge victorious over his fellow Briton after seven tough rounds in October 2023. The return fight has been slated to take place on the May 18.
A long-time fan of his local club, the 35-year-old has always dreamt that one day he would be able to lace up and walk out in his hallowed ground.
Taking to Twitter, Nottingham’s Wood shared the news that his promotional outfit Matchroom Boxing have been trying their hardest to make a fight in the venue come to fruition.
“Matchroom have done everything they can do, it’s down to the club now who are working really hard to help get it across the line. Hopefully some good news very soon,” he confirmed.
Fighting at the City Ground will assist the Nottingham-born-and-bred boxer in continuing to build his own legacy. He has publicly stated the high respect he holds for local hero Carl Froch, though a venue like this would allow ‘Leigh-tal’ to shine in his own right,
This update comes only a few days after Eddie Hearn, while speaking to Ariel Helwani, revealed he had been in contact with the football club regarding the May 18 event taking place at the 30,000-capacity City Ground, which was first built 126 years ago in 1898.
“May 18th is the proposed date. We’re in talks with the club, they’ve got a big concert on the week after so it’s just about getting the logistics right,” Hearn stated. “Not to put too much pressure on Nottingham Forest, but it’s in the hands of the club. We’ve got a fight ready to go, I believe, on May 18th with Wood vs Warrington II”.
