Background
Former Commonwealth, British and European champion Lee McGregor aims to complete the set with a world title fight back home in Scotland after almost four years fighting away.
Mexican Erik Robles Ayala was stopped early in his career, in his seventh fight, but has won his last seven in a row, four by knockout. The southpaw is light on his feet, has good upper body movement and can bang. He has mean left hook! He can box on the outside and doesn't mind trading on the inside if it comes to it. He is a very well-rounded fighter with plenty of tools in his toolbox, but he is up against a special fighter in McGregor.
The 26-year-old from Edinburgh, trained by Ben Davison, has one draw on his record against Diego Alberto Ruiz and has also been knocked down before so is not invincible. The Scot likes to fight at mid to close range where he can apply pressure and land short, potent shots to heady and body. He has nine knockouts from 12 victories, so both these guys can punch. Expect fireworks on Friday!
Quotes
Lee McGregor: “It’s a big fight, it’s a life changing fight for me. I didn’t think it would be possible to go straight back into a big title fight like this, and so when it got put forward, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. It’s going to get the fans buzzing, get people talking about me again and so I need to go in and put on a performance to pick up this belt and add it to my collection. But it is very, very risky with these fights. We’ve seen time and time again with Mexicans coming over to the UK and upsetting people, so I need to be switched on.”
Erik Robles: “On July 21, in Edinburgh, I will add my name to the long list of world champions from Mexico. Everyone expects McGregor to win this fight, he is the favourite and he has his home fans on his side, but he has never faced a Mexican fighter before. Next month, he will learn all about the Mexican fighting spirit.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Robles and McGregor can both hit hard so someone is getting knocked out on Friday night! I expect this pair to meet in the middle and not allow each other an inch of space. McGregor will need to force Robles backwards and rely on his superior movement to land his shots and evade the attacks coming back at him. With educated pressure and big shots getting through, I think McGregor could stop Robles in this fight, but I think it could take a few rounds to wear him down, maybe from four onwards. Robles will always be a threat throughout, so McGregor has to keep his guard tight and his movement fluid and evasive.”
