Lee McGregor sets friendship aside for Kash Farooq fight
The Commonwealth bantamweight (7-0, 6 KOs) king faces British champion Kash Farooq (13-0, 6 KOs) on tonight’s colossal sold out #MTKFightNight at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena – live on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and on iFL TV worldwide.
With a tense build-up hitting fever pitch, the proud undefeated warriors are just hours away from the chance to unify titles and seize bragging rights.
McGregor said:“This fight simply means a lot for Scottish boxing. It’s huge for the public and for all the young kids coming through, who’ll watch it and aspire to be in the position Kash and I are in.
“This is a fight that doesn’t need any animosity or sharp words between us. We have respect for one another. The fact both of us are getting in the ring to put things on the line says a lot about us.
“It’s his hometown but I’m not sure who’ll have the bigger support. I’ll bring an army over from Edinburgh. My fans have been great throughout my career and this fight has been sold out for months.
“The winner has some life-changing opportunities ahead of them so while I have respect for him, it’s not difficult to set the friendship aside when there’s so much at stake.”
Joining McGregor vs. Farooq on the historic card is another battle between two undefeated fighters as Kieran Smith (15-0, 7 KOs) puts his WBC International Silver super-welterweight crown on the line against Vincenzo Bevilacqua (16-0).
A lengthy undercard features Tommy Philbin against dangerous light-heavyweight rival Nicolas Holcapfel plus Irish prospects Paddy Donovan and Pierce O’Leary as well as Mark McKeown and Craig Morgan.
