Background
Martinez and Warrington met in the ring five years ago for the WBC International featherweight title in the very same venue, which the 'Leeds Warrior' won by mixed decision. Although two judges scored the bout 116-112, the third saw it as a draw.
Just two fights later, Josh became a world champion by edging Lee Selby on points and now he gets the chance to fight his old title, which he successfuly defended three times before vacating in order to fight for other world titles, which never materialised for him.
He was stunned during lockdown by meddling Mexican Mauricio Lara, whom he bravely rematched with in September 2021 only for the contest to be disappointingly halted in the second round due to an accidental head clash.
Martinez upset Kid Galahad last November to rip the IBF belt away from the Brit with a sixth-round stoppage after chinning him in the fifth. He became a two-weight world champion with the stunning victory.
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “I believe Warrington will grind out another hard-fought points win against Kiko. They know each other very well, both at similar level, but the home advantage and the desire to become world champion again, I believe, will give Warrington the added edge.”
