Julio César Martínez defends WBC title on December 16
World Boxing Council flyweight champion Julio César “Rey” Martínez (20-2, 15KO; 2NC) will headline Showtime Championship Boxing’s boxing tripleheader in what will be the final broadcast on December 16 from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Martínez will face Venezuelan Angelino Cordova (18-0-1, 12KO) in a title fight scheduled for 12 championship rounds.
Martínez of Mexico City will attempt his seventh title defense, which will come four years to the day of his December 2019 knockout victory over Cristofer Rosales.
The last time out, he defeated Panamanian Ronal Batista, whom he stopped in the 11th round on May 6, on the homecoming card of his gym partner Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico.
28-year-old Cordova enters the first title fight of his career following the two biggest wins of his career, winning WBO Latino and WBO International titles successively.
Venezuelan Cordova defeated former title challenger Axel Aragón Vega in Kissimmee, Florida. Cordova then defeated Puerto Rican Angel ‘Tito’ Acosta by decision in a great performance on April 6 in Indio, California.
Known as the “Huracan”, he is the No.1 ranked flyweight in his country. He is also WBC #13, IBF #11, WBO #11, IBO #37.
MExican “El Rey” will be looking for another win to retain his green and gold status to be in prime position to challenge the winner of Sunny Edwards (IBF) vs Jesse Rodriguez (WBO), who clash on the same night – December 16 – in Arizona, America, live on DAZN.
