Background
Both boxers are experienced amateurs who represented their countries internationally and are now unbeaten as pros, ranked in the top five in the world.
The 32-year-old visitor is the No.1 ranked light-heavyweight in Poland and also world placed at WBC #21 / IBF #13 / WBO #4 / IBO #26. Trained by Jurij Wachtierow at the Jura Boks Boxing Gym in his home city of Szczecin, Stepien has won two Polish titles as well as the IBF Inter-Continental light-heavyweight title in 2021. He defeated Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna in his penultimate fight in March 2022, an opponent British fight fans will know for knocking out Queensberry Promotions prospect Karol Itauma in January this year.
Buatsi, 30 from Croydon, won on points against world title contender Craig Richards in his last fight, last May, which was his only fight of the year; and prior to that he ended an impressive seven-fight winning streak of Golden Contract tournament winner Ricards Bolotniks with a dominant 11th round TKO.
He now sits at WBA #1 waiting for his shot at the champion, Dmitry Bivol, so he can't afford any slip ups here.
Who is Joshua Buatsi next opponent, Pawel Stepien?Quotes
Buatsi: “Every time I step in the aim is to be dominant. It's always my aim. That's the sport that we're in. I'm not much of a trashtalker. I'm quite aware that when I get in the ring this is my time to actually make a statement. I'm very much aware that when it's time to fight I always have to show up. He boxed at a good level for his country. I saw a bout of him in the World Series of Boxing. For me, I think to represent a country or a nation at that level, you must have been good for them to choose you. So I think he's someone who's got good amateur pedigree and recently he was meant to fight Callum Smith. So if you're willing to fight the likes of Smith and being in camp already for that fight, which was meant to be earlier on [in March] then he'll be in good shape. I think he's a good opponent.”
Stepien: “Buatsi is a very good fighter. I have watched and studied his fights and I'm happy that I can step in the ring with him on Saturday night and test my skills. This is the height of my career. I'm even more happy that I'm in the main event.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Stepien has respectable experience as a boxer, both in the amateurs and pro ranks. His close points win over Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna last year kind of gives you a marker to show what level he is at, but he hasn't fought up at Buatsi's level yet, who is currently WBA #1 and beat a world title contender in his last fight. JB starts fights quite fast so I could very easily envisage an early stoppage. Stepien hasn't been stopped as a pro, probably due to the lower level of opposition he's faced, but I watched him get stopped in round three of five in the World Boxing Series to a double Olympic champion and five-time world champion from Cuba, Julio Cesar la Cruz. In that fight, we learnt that he can be overpowered and outboxed, but he gave a real go in the first round, showing plenty of heart to keep going until the towell was thrown in in the third.
“I'm picking Buatsi to win within the first six rounds.”
