Background
Josh Warrington has exceeded many people's expectations by winning English, Commonwealth, British, European, and World featherweight titles, with his traditional high workrate and busy style, even defeating boxing great Carl Frampton along the way.
The 30-year-old was looking unstoppable until a routine clash with twice-beaten unheralded Mexican Mauricio Lara thwarted his big unification plans.
In his 31st contest, Warrington acknowledged his unknown opponent's punching power, having stopped eight from his last 10 opponents before travelling to the UK for his first fight outside of his continent. The visitor was lively and dangerous from the first bell and stunned Warrington endured an unexpected upset defeat as he was dropped and nearly stopped in the fourth round before ‘Bronco’ sent him crashing to the canvas again in the ninth to end the favourite’s unbeaten record.
The upset-of-the-year contender sent shockwaves through the 126lbs division and now Warrington will look to exact revenge in front of a capacity crowd at the home of the Leeds Rhinos in the biggest fight of his career that could make or break him.
Quotes
Lara: “I’ve never been much of a talker, I’d rather do my talking in the ring. I'm going for a repeat performance on September 4. Hit once, hit twice. Warrington should know that I am coming for him. This is all about pride. This is for Mexico!"
Warrington: “It’s been an up and down period, time for reflection and to reassess myself. I’ve watched the first fight a dozen times, I’m mentally and physically prepared for Mauricio. It won’t be the same result, I want revenge. It’s going to be a huge event in Leeds, I can’t wait to get back in there and rewrite the script. It’s nothing personal, just business. September 4th we get back on track to the top.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson,BBN Editor: “The result of the first fight was a huge shock to everyone because Lara was an unknown fighter, who had never fought outside of his local area before, never fought for a title, had two losses on his ledger already… there were just so many factors that led to Warrington and all of us fight fans mistakingly overlook him that night.
I remember straight after the fight believing that were a few reasons that led to Warrington's defeat, such as overlooking his opponent, the lack of crowd spurring him on, looking a bit flat on the night. Taking nothing away from Lara because he was explosive and dangerous from the very first bell.
Although I do think Josh will be refreshed and better than the last fight, I also believe that he will feel the power from the Mexican again, especially with his busy style sitting on the chest of his opponents.
I'm hopeful for a points win from Josh, but I feel that Lara's confidence, knowing he has his number and the power to hurt him, that a big shot will land and trouble Josh again. I'll go with a Warrington points win, but I'll be fearful of another Lara stoppage all the way through the contest."
