Background
This pair of undefeated 140-pounders have been on a collision course for some time now.
Catterall has worked his way into the WBO No.1 position with 26 straight wins but stepped aside last year to allow Taylor to become the undisputed super-lightweight champion with a win in his last fight against Jose Carlos Ramirez, knocking the Californian down twice to win unanimously. So now, 'El Gato' gets to fight for all the marbles in one go.
This rivalry between England and Scotland, however it plays out, will ensure all the titles remain in the UK.
What have they said?
Taylor: "It’s easy for me to flick that switch. If you said go and fight him right now, I’d do it. Easy as pie for me to switch the mentality into fight mode. I have a lot of time for Jack, he’s a good person and a good fighter, but it’s time to put the friendship and the respect aside until after the fight. May the best man win. I just believe on the night he’s not getting anywhere near me. I definitely believe I can get Jack out of there, 100%, especially if I hit him clean. I see a lot of holes in his game and his defence. If the opportunity is there I will be taking it – you don’t get paid overtime in this game. I can’t see any ways he can win this fight. I am laser-focused on this fight and he’s not getting anywhere near these belts."
Catterall: "There’s several ways I can win this fight. [I’ll win] by turning up and being Jack Catterall. I’ll get in there and punch [his] head in. It’s going to mean everything to me. Not just this 12-week fight camp but the last couple of years of training and discipline, it’s all going to come together to cause an upset. I am convinced I will win. Respect is there as Josh said but as fighters we have to switch that on. It’s a business and we’re here to bring the heat in January."
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “I think both fighters are brilliant and what an exciting time for British boxing to have two Brits clash for an undisputed crown on our shores. Taylor has proved himself as the No.1 super-lightweight in the world – that's undisputed, a title he has rightfully earned and in such a quick time as well. Catterall, I believe, is world-level fighter, but I just don't think it's his time yet. He is lacking the experience at this level. Taylor has been a world champion for over two-and-a-half years now and has had two career-best wins, when he beat Regis Prograis in that epic WBSS final in 2019, then the dominant victory over Jose Carlos Ramirez in May this year. He's seen off five unbeaten fighters in a row and three of them were world champions. I think 'The Tartan Tornado' is superior in every department to 'El Gato' and I have a sneaky feeling he could get through with one of those short, powerful body shots to hurt Catterall and potentially end the fight early.”
