Scottis superstar Josh Taylor targets mega welterweight fights
The undisputed super lightweight champion, Josh Taylor (18-0, 13KOs), plans to move up to 147 pounds, after demonstrating his greatness in the 140lbs division, thanks to memorable victories over Regis Prograis, Viktor Postol and, most recently, José Ramírez.
The Great Scot will defend his hoard of world titles against WBO #1 Jack Catterall (26-0, 13KOs) on February 26 in Glasgow, Scotland.
If the 31-year-old southpaw emerges victorious from that challenge, several attractive opponents await him at 147 pounds.
Formidable WBO welterweight king Terence Crawford (38-0, 29KOs); WBA 'Super' titlist Jordenis Ugas (27-4, 12KOs), who just sent Manny Pacquiao into retirement in August 2021; and WBC and IBF ruler Errol Spence Jr. (27-0, 21KOs) are all the current dominant fighters at welterweight and the talented Taylor has the desire to prove himself there in the near future.
34-year-old 'Bud' would be an attractive clash due to their similarities, as Crawford was the last undisputed super lightweight champion before Taylor.
“I’d like to go up to 147 and become a two-weight world champion,” Taylor said in an interview with The Ring Magazine. “Chase some of these big, massive fights, that’s what I want to do.”
He added, “Hopefully I will become a undisputed welterweight world champion in the near future. This is one of my goals for 2022. It is definitely something very possible.”
First of all, 'The Tartan Tornado' must get through the stiff challenge of 'El Gato', who is undefeated in 26 contests. Despite this impressive record, his best wins have only come against domestic names such as Tyrone McKenna and Ohara Davies. The latter was widely outpointed by the Englishman in 2018, but Taylor famously stopped him in the seventh in their grudge match, nine fights ago when he was just a 9-0 prospect.
The Britons are set to clash live on Sky Sports in an eagerly-awaited event presented by BOXXER. Undercard details are yet to be released.
