Unbeaten lightweight Jordan Flynn continues win streak
Professional boxing returned to Oxford for the first time in 60 years!
Unbeaten rising lightweight star Jordan Flynn-Dhanjal (7-0, 1KO) headlined the Kassam Stadium conference centre in front of a sellout crowd to defeat tough Russian Rustem Fatkhullin (8-46, 3KO) 59-55 on points over six-rounds.
Ahead of his first ever headlining bout, the 26-year-old beamed, "It's always been a dream to fight at home. I'm normally fighting in Essex or London."
His opponent Rustem Fatkhullin, based in Southampton and born in Russia, accepted the bout at the last minute and normally fights slightly heavier up at welterweight.
The 29-year-old journeyman has eight wins from 54 bouts and has only been stopped twice.
Flynn-Dhanjal won the bout comfortably, which was his sixth six-rounder in a row after having just one four-rounder in his pro debut in December 2019.
"I'm at the stage in my career where I need good fights. I don't need opponents who are just going to fall over."
It was a memorable night for Flynn-Dhanjal's fellow Oxford boxers Ciaran Flanagan and Bradley Townsend too, as they both came away with a win each. Home fighter Tom Brennan was held to a draw by Rotherham's Martin Shaw.
"We knew we'd get a good bit of interest and we're delighted. In hindsight we could have put more fights on and got a bigger venue," Promoter Mark Neilson said.
"This is great for Oxford's fighters and great for local people to be able to come and watch them."
