Joe’s Jab – Weekly column by promoter Joe Elfidh of JE Promotions
JE Boxing is the only professional boxing platform in Kent, owned by ‘The Moroccan Machine’ – Joe Elfidh.
As a fighter, Joe was a two-weight Central Area title contender, defeated a future England champion, and shared the ring with British, Commonwealth and World champions.
As a promoter, he is single-handedly bringing big-time boxing back to The Garden of England.
Welcome to his weekly column exclusive to BBN.
Spiros Demetriou
I was at the York Hall on the first weekend of November with my light-heavyweight prospect – SD.
He won every round comfortably, dominating from the start and managed to stop his opponent in the seventh.
Istvan Orsos from Hungary hasn’t been stopped in over four years and 32 fights! SD did something that over half a dozen unbeaten prospects couldn’t manage to do.
He’s 27, built like a bodybuilder and sells tickets well. I’ll be sitting down with him and his team soon to discuss what to aim for next but we’ll be looking at a title fight very soon.
Grant Dennis
Last weekend in Brighton, my middleweight prospect Grant Dennis took a trip down to the Sussex coastline to snatch the Southern Area middleweight belt away from the champion Nick Jenman in his own backyard.
Grant outclassed him for the 10-rounds but fair play to Nick, he was game.
The champion started fast in the opening rounds but eventually Grant just overtook him and caught him with some very heavy shots. He had him hurt in round eight but, being the champion he is, he got through it, although he looked like he was just surviving towards the end.
The scorecards said it was closer than I actually thought it was. Personally, I thought that Grant won by wider margin than 97-95.
It’s my first ever Area champion and it feels good, it’s a great achievement for JE Promotions but even greater for Grant! I know how hard he works for it and to be the Southern Area champ after only seven fights is phenomenal really.
Grant Dennis could really benefit from a big promoters deal with Frank Warren, for example. His latest groundbreaking deal with BT Sport needs fighters like Grant performing on that big stage for everyone to see on TV.
Swampy’s Revenge
JE Promotions have secured the first ever professional boxing show to be held in Sheppey.
Unbeaten heavyweight Dave Jones is back and middleweight prospect Oli Edwards is also in action.
I promised them both that I would do a show in their hometown and I delivered for them. I’m a man of my word and there’s not many promoters that would go out of their way to do something like that for their fighters.
I think it’s only fair because they travel to Maidstone all the time to fight and bring hundreds of supporters with them so it’s nice for me to be able pay them back.
Sheppey is a big boxing area and there’s a lot of unlicensed events round that way but not pro shows, so it’ll be a boost for the place to finally have professional boxing action available to them.
Grant Dennis will also be in action on the card in a six-rounder to kick-start what will be an exciting year for him.
