JE Promotions are forced to postpone their Summer Showdown event on fight week
A series of injuries and withdrawals forced promoter Joe Elfidh to cancel the scheduled July 7 event until further notice.
He released the following statement: “Due to a series of unfortunate events the show due to take place at Mote Park Leisure Centre on 7th July will be cancelled.
“This has not been a decision taken lightly and is based on wanting to offer the paying audience the quality as advertised, as opposed to a watered-down version that would have been on instead.
“The show has been marred by injuries and boxers pulling out, some have only just been confirmed this at midday today.”
English title contender Grant Dennis (10-1) was due to headline in his eagerly-awaited ring return against Islington’s Jordan Grannum (3-27), but was offered a Commonwealth super-middleweight title shot against Indian megastar Vijender Singh (10-0) on July 13 at York Hall, following Lee Markham’s withdrawal due to an elbow injury.
Maidstone’s Chris Matthews (9-1) injured his fist in the last training session of the camp, British Challenge belt champion Charlie Shane (6-0) suffered a last-minute injury, and local heavyweight hero Dave Jones (8-2-1) had been lured away by last weekend’s IBO Continental heavyweight title challenge in Glasgow to Martin Bakole (11-0), which ended within the first-round for Jones.
The show was left with just middleweight Lenny Fuller (1-0), 23 from Chart Sutton; welterweight Danny Barrett (1-0), 25 from Stoke in Kent; and light-heavyweight Aidan Cassidy, 23 from Sittingbourne.
All tickets are refundable and an announcement will be made shortly regarding therescheduled date.
