Mauricio Sulaiman came to London especially to present Jamie Moore with a prestigious award
The WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, visited the UK this week for a very special presentation to honour world champion trainer Jamie Moore for his work with undisputed super-lightweight champion, Chantelle Cameron.
The former Irish, British, Commonwealth and European super-welterweight champion from Salford enjoyed a hugely successful professional career between 1999-2010, winning 32 from 37 bouts, but now, aged 44, he has just guided undefeated Chantelle Cameron (18-0, 8KO) to becoming undisputed at super-lightweight in November last year, which is a crown she very recently retained in a career-best performance and victory – notably as the underdog from the away corner – against Irish superstar Katie Taylor in Dublin in May.
Mauricio, 53 from Mexico, hosted a lunch at the Clermont Hotel in Strand to present Jamie with the special honour, of which a host of boxing stars were present to join in the celebrations, including Scott Welch, George Groves, Spencer Oliver and Michael Watson MBE.
Mauricio proudly announced, “We like to meet the boxing community every time we have an opportunity, we’ve been to Rome for a special work, so we took a couple of days to be here in London and then plane back to Mexico tomorrow.
“So, this is a moment to be with Chantelle Cameron, our proud WBC champion, undisputed champion; and presented Jamie Moore with a WBC Trainers belt, which is the inspiration of Angelo Dundee, in the shape of a towel. It’s a special trophy for a trainer who crowns a WBC champion.”
Mauricio was also mentioned Moore’s charitable work in his local community as the co-founder of the Maverick Stars Trust, which includes a boxing gym for all ages, named Walkden ABC.
Trained by the late, great Oliver Harrison, Moore didn’t manage to win a world title during his stellar career, but he did defeat a former world champion when he knocked out ex-IBF welterweight titlist Michele Piccirillo in the third round of their European title fight in March 2009 in Wigan.
Jamie was extremely grateful to receive the prestigious award and quipped, “I didn’t get one as a fighter, so this’ll do!”
Along with Nigel Travers at the VIP Gym in Astley, Moore also trains Jack Catterall, who was cruelly denied the decision to become undisputed super-lightweight champion in his controversial defeat to bitter rival Josh Taylor in February 2022. Moore is also well known for his work with Carl Frampton, Tommy Coyle, Rocky Fielding, Conrad Cummings, and many others.
