Danny Dignum vs Alfredo Meli weights
Saturday’s huge card is live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and worldwide on IFL TV – and features Danny Dignum (12-0, 6 KOs) defending his WBO European middleweight title against Alfredo Meli (17-0-1, 5 KOs) in the main event.
Elsewhere, Sam Gilley (10-0, 5 KOs) takes on Curtis Felix Jr (10-1, 1 KO) for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title, Shaquille Day (13-0, 2 KOs) faces Kaisee Benjamin (9-1-1, 2 KOs), while unbeaten James Hawley (5-0) and Josh Adewale (3-0) also square off.
It was Hawley and Adewale who stole the headlines at the weigh-in, with the two men pulled apart due to Adewale pushing Hawley after a fiery back and forth.
Hawley weighed in at 11st 6lbs 6oz for the fight between the two undefeated fighters, while Adewale was slightly lighter at 11st 6lbs 1oz.
It was much more respectful in the main event fight, with defending champion Dignum weighing 11st 5lbs 8oz, and challenger Meli weighing 11st 5lbs 4oz.
There was more drama in the Southern Area title fight involving Gilley and Felix Jr, with a lot of needle between the two men. Gilley was 10st 6lbs 6oz, and Felix Jr was 10st 6lbs 2oz.
ADEWALE SENDS WARNING TO HAWLEY
Josh Adewale has revealed he was in the dark as to who fellow unbeaten middleweight James Hawley was before Saturday’s fight was made.
The two put their perfect records on the line on #MTKFightNight in Brentwood – live on ESPN+ in the US in association with Top Rank and on iFL TV worldwide.
Having eased to 3-0 since turning professional in late 2018, Slough’s Adewale is sure he’ll have too much for Bromley’s 5-0 Hawley.
Adewale said:“To be honest, before this fight got made, I didn’t have a clue who James was. Now I know everything I need to know and more.
“Me and my team are always in the gym and we’re always working. I’ve improved on just about everything since my last fight. That last bout was back in July, so I’ve had lots of time to work on things.
“I’m not delusional – I’m just confident in my ability and I’m willing to take risks. All of his weaknesses shall be exploited come fight night. ALL of them.
“I saw an interview of his where we was open about neglecting training in the past. It’s all very well having a hard training camp for this one fight and saying you’ll take it seriously, but I believe everything you do for months and years will catch up with you.
“I don’t believe one good training camp is good enough to beat someone who’s been taking it seriously for years. I’m just going to keep winning and improving and I’m so excited to be fighting on such a big stage. Getting such a big TV slot is what we train for.”
The bill in the heart of Essex is topped by the WBO European middleweight title showdown between champion Danny Dignum and the also-unbeaten Alfredo Meli; a fight that will also serve as a British title eliminator.
Fast-emerging welterweight Sam Gilley tackles Curtis Felix Jr for the Southern Area crown, Shaquille Day resumes his perfect career and there are also slots for Mitchell Frearson, Steve Donnelly, Liam Wells, Randal Barlow and Martin McDonagh.
