Undercard Highlights
There's more cruiserweight action as unbeaten Iain Martell (10-0, 4KOs) goes up against Belgian and BeNeLux cruiserweight title contender Erik Nazaryan (28-23-4, 21KOs) over eight rounds. The Georgian-born Belgian is known to fans as 'Boom-Boom' for his 21 knockouts from 28 victories – that's an impressive 75% KO ratio. However, the Norfolk 'Badman' Martell was in explosive form himself in his last fight as he knocked down durable Elvis Dube in the opening round of their May fight, then stopping the 97-fight veteran just 22 seconds into the second round, with perfectly timed left hooks to the body. The IBO have just placed him within their top 100 rankings as a result of reaching double figures undefeated.
Background
After a stellar amateur career that saw him win the Senior ABA Title and notch up wins against current British stars like Joshua Buatsi and Chris Billam-Smith, Jack turned over in 2017 and went 16 fights unbeaten before losing a competitive fight for the Lonsdale Belt against highly-rated Londoner, Richard Riakporhe.
Since then the 28-year-old from Buxton known as ‘One Smack’ has got back to winning ways with an eight rounds runout in December last year and will now go up against former French cruiserweight champion Engin Karakaplan.
34-year-old 'Engo' has only won two from his last seven contests, however, his last two fights were from the away corner against winning prospects that were not meant to lose and he turned up to spoil the party, drawing against 12-1 Aboulaye Diane and 19-5-1 Taylor Mabika.
Massey has plans to impress on his Fightzone debut to ignite his new campaign for the British cruiserweight title, which is set to be contested between European champ Tommy McCarthy and Commonwealth king Chris Billam-Smith in this very same month.
Quotes
Massey: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be headlining. I’ve seen the production, with the back to back shows and it looks amazing. I’ve got other lads in my gym like Charlie Schofield with Fight Academy, and I’ve seen what they’ve done with him, getting him a title fight straight away.
“Part of the attraction is the amount of shows they’re putting on, and I need to get our more regularly. I’ve had some bad luck with my career and it’s not gone exactly the way I’ve wanted it to, but they’ve got me straight into a title fight, which is great.
“This guy is definitely a threat. He’s a good fighter, I’ve had a look at his record and his losses have come off some world class operators. He’s no mug, he’s strong and he can box. He not lost to mugs and he’s beaten some good guys – it’s got the makings of a good fight.
“Although I haven’t boxed since November, I won’t be going in there with the mindset that I need to get rounds in. If the stoppage is there, then I’ll take it early, no doubt about that. I won’t be going for the KO and leaving myself open though; I’ll stay tidy, have a look at him and if the KO is there, I’ll take it.
“I would like to fight for the British Title again. We’ll see what happens, there are lots of options out there but I’m just excited to get the chance to get some solid momentum with Fight Academy and show the Fightzone viewers what I’m all about.”
Kev Maree: “Jack became a free agent and we had lots of options but I was really excited by the plan and vision of Fight Academy. Like me they believe Jack is a future world champion and they will do everything to give us the fights and platform to facilitate that. I’ve been blown away by the quality of the shows in the Fightzone Arena. It’s up there with the best I’ve seen. They are modern, fun, current, and I think the future of where boxing shows are headed.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson,BBN Editor: “Jack Massey is one of Britain's best cruiserweights in a division currently brimming with talent. He was only just edged out by Richard Riakporhe in their December 2019 British title fight, the 10th round knockdown proving to be the difference on the scorecards – two of the judges could have scored the contest even if it wasn't for that 10-8 round. It was such a close contest that Riakporhe was just a round ahead for most of it, but Massey was brilliant throughout. I haven't seen much of his opponent, but a former French champion who hasn't won in any of his last four fights surely cannot trouble a fighter of Massey's calibre, who will be looking ahead to British, Commonwealth and European title shots next. I definitely think Massey wins by knockout, and can even see it being early, within the first two or three rounds.”
