Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall rematch pending
Jack Catterall (28-1, 13KO) responded to a fan on social media platform X today, to confirm his next fight will be against bitter rival Josh Taylor (19-1, 13KO).
Chorley's Catterall tweeted, "My manager has spoken to Josh's manager and both agreed this is the fight to make next so it's over to Eddie Hearn now to get at deal done with TR [Top Rank].
"I'm ready to go and no judges will be needed this time."
Catterall and Taylor famously fought in February 2022 to a split decision verdict. The defending champion was awarded the win in his home city of Glasgow, but not without controversy. The decision angered the boxing community after the challenger, Catterall, knocked Taylor down in the eighth round and cut him over his left eye, even having a point deducted in the 11th for punching after the bell when he had become frustrated and desperate. Many considered this fight to be one of the biggest robberies of recent times.
One judge's scorecard was so unrealistic that he was brought in front of the British Board to explain his scoring and subsequently downgraded.
The rematch has been called for ever since, but Taylor has only fought once in the 23 months that have passed since that fight, which was against Teofimo Lopez in New York, losing for the first time in his career via unanimous decision. He was relieved of his one remaining world title in the process – the WBO super-lightweight belt.
Now aged 33, Taylor has a chance to earn a win over his biggest rival in a convincing manner to put the rivalry to bed. However, a win to Catterall will raise many questions over the Scot's career and potentially set up an even bigger trilogy decider.
There's no love lost between these two, who haven't stopped trading insults for the past two years, so a rematch will provide plenty of entertainment in the build-up, and will be another exciting fight and huge event for boxing.
