First ABCO bridger champion endorsed by the WBC
With the establishment of the Bridgerweight division via the World Boxing Council, the ABCO (Asian Boxing Council) reformulated the classification system to adapt this innovative category for professional boxing in Asia.
The first ever match in history for the WBC Asia bridgerweight title took place in Seoul, South Korea, between two top local prospects on December 18, 2021.
Sung Ming Lee (7-2-1, 2KOs) and Ja Sung Jo (4-3) clashed for the crown to make regional boxing history as the first ABCO champion of this new division.
In a battle worthy of admiration, intense from start to finish, the contest went the full 10-round distance, and although Suwon's Sung Ming Lee is the reigning South Korean heavyweight champion and bookies favourite, it was Seoul's Ja Sung Jo was the one who had his raised to win Green and Gold glory.
The 36-year-old defeated 31-year-old Lee unanimously, with scores of 97-93, 97-93, 96-94, despite coming into the contest following back to back defeats. It's the South Korean's first ever professional title and hopefully the first of many more.
