Introducing James Dean Fury
British Boxing News recently caught up with 16-year-old amateur boxing prospect James Dean Fury at the historic Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall weigh-in on Friday, October 14.
There's Tyson, there's Hughie, Tommy, Peter, Big John, then along came Roman recently, who just made his pro debut this month (ending in a 40-36 points win), and now there's yet another fighting Fury from the famous family… introducing James Dean!
The teenager has already scooped up a junior national title and north-west championships, and is fresh from beating the Welsh champion in his own backyard!
Training with his great uncle Peter, alongside Tommy and Savannah Marshall is clearly paying off.
Eddie Saint-Jean spoke to the aspiring star from solid stock all about his boxing progress under the Fury stable.
How are you related to Tyson Fury?
"My grandad and his dad are brothers."
Are you looking to follow in the footsteps of your famous cousin?
"One hundred per cent, yes. That’s the plan. I’ll just keep training hard and listening to what I am told and I’ll get there."
Who are you trained by?
"My great uncle Peter Fury trains me."
How many fights have you had so far?
"I’ve had about 14 or 15 fights."
And what’s your boxing record at this stage of your career?
"I don’t really count because it's amateur boxing. But I’ve only lost around two or three, something like that."
And one of your victories was against the Welsh Champion, right?
"Yes, last Thursday I went over to Wales and beat the Welsh champion."
When are you fighting next?
"Whenever the phone rings, really. Whenever I get a text message saying you can fight again, then I’m out."
And are you looking to join the professional ranks?
"Yes, I am looking to turn pro when I’m around 20."
