Latest updates from the IBO
All the latest news from the independent International Boxing Organization right here
The International Boxing Organization have released their monthly newsletter for September 2021, consisting of all the latest stories surrounding the respected independent governing body in boxing, featuring the highly-anticipated heavyweight clash between Joshua and Usyk in London, all of the upcoming IBO title fights and more.
Interim titles – Are they ever appropriate?
The additional world titles and confusion occasioned by the proliferation and excessive designation of interim world championships has finally, thankfully, been properly addressed with the abolishment of those titles by a major sanctioning body. But, as originally intended, the rules and regulations of all sanctioning bodies do provide an appropriate time for the use of an interim world championship when a world champion is medically disabled. For clarity, the IBO Rules and Regulations for interim championships have been rarely invoked but will remain in place when appropriately necessary.
For those interested, a brief summary of the Rules:
If the Champion is unable to defend his championship within the required time period because he is physically disabled and said disability has been medically verified, the Champion may be granted a reasonable time to recover and retrain to competitive level.
In that case, the IBO may order an interim championship bout during the time that the Champion is medically excused and therefore inactive. If an interim championship is held due to a Champion’s medically excused inactivity, the Champion, when he is medically able and prepared to compete, must defend his title against the interim champion or the interim champion shall become the full Champion.
