Background
William Zepeda returns to action on Mexican Independence Day when he takes on Mercito Gesta in a 12-round lightweight contest.
Zepeda will be hoping to make his second fight of 2023 a memorable one after he knocked out Jaime Arboleda in the second round of their clash in April.
Gesta meanwhile comes into this matchup on the back of two straight victories, but can he extend this streak to a hat trick against the popular Mexican?
Quotes
Zepeda: “I heard the comments that I had built my record in Mexico fighting those types of opponents and that’s why I had a lot of knockouts. Then when I fought (Rene) Alvarado and (Joseph) Diaz in the United States, those fights went the distance. So, I heard those comments about not being able to knock out opponents in the United States. I focused more in training camp and I came with everything, and I demonstrated I can knock out opponents, like Arboleda, in the United States.
“I knew that fighting opponents like Alvarado and Diaz would give me more experience fighting ex-world champions. I came out to enjoy my work in the ring and demonstrated what I was capable of in the Arboleda fight.
“We know the degree of difficulty Mercito Gesta is as an opponent. He is a fighter with a lot of experience. He can fight from distance and he can fight on the inside as well. We can’t underestimate him because Mercito is a very dangerous fighter.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Zepeda is up against an experienced operator in Gesta, who turned pro aged 16 and is now 35. The Filipino is going to present problems for Zepeda, with his ring intelligence and variable ways of fighting at range and on the inside, but the 27-year-old Mexican has overcome all challenges so far, including three-time world title contender Jo Jo Diaz, who Gesta also defeated. It was a unanimous decision win for Zepeda, and a split decision victory for Gesta. The Filipino southpaw may be older but he's still light and bouncy on his feet with good reflexes and head movement, but has only won three from his last six. Despite being a mobile opponent, Gesta can be backed up and trapped on the ropes, which I can see Zepeda doing regularly. I think the confidence, youth and power of Zepeda will triumph in this fight with a knockout win. I would say that Gesta will take this fight far, but there's something telling me that Zepeda could even knock him out in the first four rounds. I know how good and accomplished Gesta is, especially as an opponent that is hard to pin down, but I'm a fan of Zepeda and believe that his educated pressure and the way he steps into his shots strongly, especially that incredible jab, will score a knockdown early in this fight, also due to Gesta hanging his gloves down low, I think he should get caught with a few. Gesta will move laterally both to his left and right, but Zepeda is very good at sticking to his opponent, so I think the ring will be cut off a lot. I predict Zepeda to win by round four because he is desperate to prove his naysayers wrong who claim that his impressive unbeaten record is padded out.”
