Background
Angel Fierro is hunting down the Lightweight World champions, and wants to showcase his credentials in a defence of his WBO NABO title against 26-year-old Mexican Brayan Zamarripa.
Mexican-born Californian Fierro is sitting pretty at #4 with the WBO, and the 25 year old gets a hometown outing on Mexican Independence weekend in Tijuana as he looks to build on his growing reputation for exciting performances.
‘Tashiro’ was at his explosive best in his last outing with multiple knockdowns leading to a seventh round stoppage win over Eduardo Estela in Culiacan – a fifth KO in his last six fights – and a run he’ll be looking to improve upon against southpaw Zammaripa, the Baja California man who has recorded 10 wins on the bounce since his sole defeat in 2016.
Quotes
Angel Fierro: “It’s a very important fight that I have coming up, it’s almost like he’s the shark that’s coming for me. But I am not intimidated by this challenge that’s in front of me and I am looking forward to the fight.
“I know going into this fight that he is going to come in and do his best to beat me, I respect him as a fighter, he’s coming for war and when you get two Mexicans going into the ring, you are guaranteed a war; but if I want to be World champion, I need to take this step and beat my opponent to show I am ready for my World title shot.
“It’s great to be fighting at home for so long not being here and it’s an extra motivation that it’s on Mexican Independence weekend.”
Brayan Zamarripa: “It’s a great fight for me, it’s a pleasure to be here, thank you for the opportunity, we’re ready to bring a war to Tijuana for Friday night, I am ready for this, and I will demonstrate what I am capable of.
“I’m sure he’s going to bring some good stuff to the table but i am ready for it. I’ve been training all my life for a moment like this, I can’t believe I’m here, so I am just getting in that ring on Friday night and give my best and put on a great show for Tijuana and the world.
“Victory on Friday night, wow, it’s going to mean a lot to me as I have been looking for an opportunity like this all my life, it’s going to be great, and I am ready for this. I’m going to take the moment.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Aside from his 10-round draw with Juan Carlos Burgos in his antepenultimate fight, Fierro has knocked out his last five victims. Brayan's sole loss came when he stepped a little early in levels in his fourth fight against a 10-0-1 opponent. He hasn't lost in six years since. This will be Fierro's fourth title defence, having held the belt for two and a half years now. He is as aggressive as they come and doesn't relent for a minute, constantly piling on the pressure, always whipping in shots to the body in true Mexican style. Zammaripa is also aggressive but he boxes on the outside and leaves space for his attacks using his long levers. Although I think Zammaripa could be the better boxer, it's the aggression of Fierro that I think will win the fight. Also his experience, he's had 10 more fights and this is his fifth championship contest, whereas Brayan hasn't fought in a title fight yet and has only had one 10-rounder. I think Zammaripa could keep him at the end of his reach for a little while but will eventually get broken down by body shots in the mid-rounds 4-7.”
