Boma “Bomber” Brown moves up to 2-0 in style
Undefeated heavyweight Boma Brown (2-0) impressed in his TV debut appearance on TNT Sports at the Telford International Centre on Saturday, July 29.
The Londoner known as “Bomber” stopped Jake Darnell (2-21) after two rounds of complete domination on the undercard of Liam Davies vs Jason Cunningham. Darnell's corner team threw in the towel after round two to end the one-sided beatdown.
The 27-year-old from Watford doubled his win tally in style after claiming a points victory in November last year.
Known as “Nellie”, Blackpool’s Jake Darnell may be a journeyman fighting from the away corner but has only been stopped twice in 22 bouts, he picked up a win just two months ago against an undefeated heavyweight and knocked down a 4-0 opponent prior to that. The 30-year-old Lancashire road warrior hadn’t been stopped in his last 10 bouts before bumping into Boma.
In round one, Boma made a very strong start, keen to announce himself on the big stage. He boxed beautifully behind a hard jab and a fast right hand, and was working well to the body with left hooks.
In the second stanza, he continued the domination but increased his output further causing some heavy facial damage to his opponent with big left and right hooks. Darnell looked very wobbly walking back to his corner, so his team decided he had taken enough punishment for one night.
Brown said post-fight, “I’m just made up with the win, made up to get the stoppage as well. I know he hasn’t been stopped much in his recent fights so, yeah, I’m just glad to get the stoppage.
“I’m just hoping to keep busy, hopefully get another one or two more this year, I’m keen to move on up.”
Trainer Paul Stevenson was delighted with his heavyweight charge’s performance, “We’re very pleased with Boma, as Darnell hardly ever gets stopped, and we were glad to see big improvements in his boxing.”
Prior to his second pro fight, Brown had sparred with Kash Ali and Dillian Whyte during his preparation and was especially eager to get back in the ring to show off the improvements he had made and worked on in training with head coach Paul Stevenson.
The university graduate grew up in North London and studied for his degree in Coventry, but Boma is now settled in Liverpool where he trains at the Everton Red Triangle gym with teammates Nick Ball, currently ranked No.2 in the world at featherweight and watching on from ringside, as well as Olympian Peter McGrail, his brother Joe, unbeaten Bradley Strand, and Andrew Cain.
Brown only started boxing aged 19 but was crowned Midlands Area champion on three occasions during his short amateur career and counted Commonwealth Games gold medallist Delicious Orie as his teammate and main sparring partner.
He explained how he ended up 200 miles southwest from home, “I started off in London, then started boxing when I went to uni in Coventry and just picked it up there. And then I decided to make the trip to Birmingham to join an amateur club, and I was down there at the Jewelry Quarter amateur club for best part of four or five years.
“In the process of that I boxed against my current coach now – Paul Stevenson – one of his lads in the amateurs and from there we just kept in contact, and the start of last year I was unsure what I wanted to do in terms of boxing, so I spoke to Paul and he said come to the gym and see how you find it, and from there I loved it straightaway.”
