Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia – Who wins?
Undefeated three-division world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis faces hard-hitting sensation “King” Ryan Garcia on Saturday, April 22, headlining live on pay-per-view from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions, live on SHOWTIME PPV.
It's the biggest fight of the year so BBN asked boxing professionals from the industry who they believe wins this potential fight of the year contender.
Mike Tyson Former undisputed world heavyweight champion
“I gotta say Tank, but it’s going to be a good fight. I don’t think [it will go] 12. But it could. I doubt it.”
Devin Haney Undisputed lightweight champion
“I think it’s a good fight.
“Ryan has the height, the speed, the length, all that. But Tank has that IQ, that experience, that power.
“So I mean the safe bet is Tank, but you cannot sleep on Ryan, he definitely can punch, he’s shown that.
“We don’t know, we’ve gotta see.”
David Price British & Commonwealth heavyweight champion
“I think Tank Davies will knock Ryan Garcia out. I don't think Ryan Garcia's got enough good punch resistance he’ll need to do 12 rounds with Tank. He got put over by Luke Campbell heavily and Luke Campbell isn’t a devastating puncher, Tank Davis is.
“I just think style wise; I think a few short clubbing punches might be enough to stun Garcia and put him out. I don’t think, despite him being a big puncher himself, I think Garcia can take more than he can, it’s about who can take the most on the night I think, and I think it will be Tank.”
Shakur Stevenson Two-weight world champion
“I think ‘Tank’ by knockout. I think that Ryan Garcia’s IQ is not enough for ‘Tank’s.
“Like I’ve been saying. It going to take a special fighter to beat ‘Tank.’ And I don’t think Ryan Garcia is a special fighter.”
David Coldwell Trainer to Jordan Gill & Hopey Price
“Garcia has his chin quite high and that’s the worry, especially during exchanges. You can see him just getting bombed.
“Tank has been guilty of loading up, but he’s got a very good boxing brain – a very underrated boxing brain. We always think about his power, but he has very good speed and skills.
“What makes it intriguing is that Tank might keep loading up and because of Garcia’s range and his own speed, he might keep him on the end of his long shots and hurt him.
“I just think they’ll exchange and I can’t see Garcia not being tagged. Garcia got dropped quite heavily by Luke Campbell, and if Tank hurts you, you’re going to stay hurt. Davis by KO.”
Codie Smith Unbeaten featherweight prospect
“I’ve got Davis by KO within six. Ryan’s a good fighter but he’s open to the overhand left, as exposed by Luke Campbell, I think it’s a Davis win in brutal fashion.”
Rick Ramos Trainer to Jessica McCaskill
“I think Ryan can win early, but if doesn't KO Tank in the first six rounds, I think Tank wins late (by stoppage).”
Tim Rickson BBN Editor
“I think Gervonta Davis is the favourite here. Only one man over the last eight years has been able to go the distance with him – Isaac Cruz. His last three knockouts all came against unbeaten boxers, with a combined total of 56-0. His power is proven at the very top and carries up through the weights with him. But not only that, he has a boxing brain too.
“I like Ryan Garcia, I think he's super talented and blisteringly fast, but I don't believe he is as heavy handed or as tough as Davis. Tank has come from a rough upbringing and you can see he is a product of his harsh environment the way he fights in the ring. He is violent, tough and hungry.
“I think Davis knocks Garcia out in the second half of the fight, probably late on during the championship rounds, but if this is a complete shootout then it could happen even earlier. I think there's not only genuine dislike between them but also a sense of pride where neither one will live it down if they lose. But, let's just say that this is going to be one of the best fights of the year yet! Last month, we were treated to Benavidez-Plant and now we have this cracker to look forward to!”
Ben Davies Boxing & MMA writer at the Mirror
“I think Tank edges it because of his explosive power. We have seen Garcia go down before against Luke Campbell who wasn't the hardest hitter in the division by any means. Garcia is a superb boxer and will cause his rival problems with his fast hands but I can see Tank landing a peach before the final bell. My prediction would be Davis by round 10 stoppage.”
John J. Raspanti, Lead writer-editor at www.maxboxing.com
“An interesting bout, not a super fight, but interesting.
“Both are undefeated with something to prove. Resumes are iffy, Davis has faced stiffer competition.
“Garcia has the advantage in length. Davis will have to get under his shots to tag him.
“He can do it. My gut tells me Davis scores a stoppage by round 11.”
