George Kambosos Jr vs Maxi Hughes signed for July
According to Fight Freaks Unite, George Kambosos Jr. has signed to fight Maxi Hughes in July in Las Vegas, headlining a Top Rank Boxing card, televised on ESPN.
Ranked 7th (GK) and 8th (MH) in the IBF world ratings, the lightweights will clash for a chance to fill the vacant No.2 spot.
Australian Kambosos Jr. (20-2, 10KO) fights for the first time since his 2022 duology with Devin Haney, which saw him lose the belts he ripped away from Teofimo Lopez.
Briton Hughes (26-5-2, 5 KO), by contrast, is in the hottest streak of his career; his current seven-fight run includes wins over Jono Carroll, Viktor Kotochigov, Jovanni Straffon, Ryan Walsh, and most recently the slick Kid Galahad last September. He is the reigning IBO lightweight champion.
Kambosos gets a stiff test to prove he still belongs among the elite and Hughes finally gets the major fight his career resurgence merits.
Kambosos is anxious to jump back into the thick of things against some of the lightweight division’s elite. Nevertheless, while Hughes hasn’t quite reached the sport’s summit, Kambosos refuses to look past him.
“I’m very focused on Maxi Hughes,” said Kambosos during an interview with FightHype.com.
Circling back to his lopsided defeats against Haney, Kambosos pulled out every trick available to him. But, despite boxing from the outside and mauling on the inside, skillful Haney quelled his offensive output.
Considering the fashion in which Kambosos suffered defeat, several in boxing circles are under the impression that his fall from grace will be an everlasting one. Those thoughts, however, are laughable to Kambosos. Though he admits that Haney was the better man on the night, the proud Aussie doesn't believe that he’s even close to hanging up his gloves.
“I’m very motivated to make a good statement to show that we aren't going anywhere. Just cause I took a loss to one guy, doesn't mean that all of a sudden I’m done, I’m finished.”
