Gemma Ruegg snatches win from the away corner
On July 1st, Gemma Ruegg (4-4) put in an excellent performance to ruin the unbeaten record and hopes of a European title shot for Irish prospect Kate Radomska (3-1) in Grays, Essex.
The 37-year-old from Bournemouth made the 280-mile round trip up the M3 well worth the journey to secure her third win of the year.
From Waterford, Radomska warned European light-flyweight champion Cassandra Crevecoeur (5-0) that she was coming for her, but now those plans will have to be put on hold. She had a chance to challenge the French beltholder earlier in the year but the call came at too short notice. The Robbie Flynn managed prospect looked at gaining more experience before taking a step up, which is why she chose to face Ruegg over eight rounds, but the road to glory took a wrong turn last night.
The victor said post-fight, "We had a game plan to set a high pace from round one, I wasn't going to give her any distance or thinking time. We realised after the first round the straight shots were working so we stuck to it, not taking a step back. I think our styles made a great fight."
Trained by her hsuband, Danny Ruegg, Gemma looked ahead to what's next, "Next I'm scheduled to fight in Bournemouth on July 23rd in front of my home crowd. In the meantime, my husband Danny Ruegg and manager Steve Bendall will be hoping to match me with bigger opportunities.
"I'm definitely learning on the job and the dream would be to keep getting better and better until I can win as many titles as I get the opportunity to fight for."
Promoter Steve Bendall commented, "Great win tonight for Gemma Ruegg. Against a girl who was being lined up to fight for the European title.
"We went to Grays, beat her on her own show. Time for Gemma to get a title shot."
