Background
Originally the show was set for Saturday, but Hamzah Sheeraz withdrew from his step-up fight with Liam Williams due to injury, so Gwynne-Marsili was moved up to main event, swtiched from the Copper Box to the York Hall and brought forward to Friday.
Gavin Gwynne (16-2-1, 4KO) will take on the veteran unbeaten Italian Emiliano Marsili (42-0-1, 16KO) for the EBU title following his signing of a multi-fight promotional deal with Frank Warren and Queensberry.
The 33-year-old, who joined the professional ranks in 2016, has won Welsh, British and Commonwealth titles, and now looks to take the natural step up to the EBU blue belt.
In 2012, Marsili travelled to the Liverpool Olympia and stopped home favourite Derry Mathews in the seventh round to win the IBO world lightweight title. Now 47, the 43-fight veteran is fighting for the same belt he once won in 2013 and defended four times.
Quotes
Frank Warren: “This is another bumper card for the fans following up on the Magnificent 7 show up in Manchester a couple of weeks before.
“It is a strong line-up of fights with a couple still to be added and I am delighted to welcome Gavin Gwynne to our ranks and get him going with a fully deserved European title shot against remarkable opponent in Emiliano Marsili, who is undefeated at the age of 47 after 43 fights at a high level.
“Our iBox Gym brigade is out in force with Sam Noakes and Pierce O’Leary all set for big fights, plus Raven Chapman with a defence of her WBC belt ahead of very significant fights next year.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Marsili is experienced having been professional for over 20 years now. Gwynne hasn't lost in his last five fights, which have all been 12-round championships contests. I'll be hoping that the home support and advantages will favour Gwynne, who is 14 years younger than his Italian opponent, but I think this is a 50-50 fight that will go to the final bell and could go either way. I'm going to pick Gwynne to win on points in a close contest.”
