Sky Sports aiming to partner with anybody, says Warren
In a recent interview with SecondsOut, Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren revealed the latest news surrounding the void that Matchroom Boxing are leaving at Sky Sports now that they have agreed a new lucrative deal with DAZN.
The question everyone has been asking is who will be replacing Matchroom Boxing now that their exclusive Sky Sports TV deal is nearing it's end. Speculations were that Sauerland Promotions would be the leading candidate to step in and fill the shoes, but the head of Queensberry Promotions revealed otherwise.
Frank Warren said: "I'm hearing through the grapevine that Sky are appointing John Wischhusen to look after their boxing. John is a very knowledgable guy so he's going to be deciding what direction they are going with and I think that they are going to work with, basically, anybody, so I understand."
There will now be three major players in the UK broadcast market, between Sky Sports, BT Sport and DAZN, which Warren is enthused about, "It's great for British boxing, the more the merrier. The more you can get it out there, the more you can get British boxing in people's faces, the better it is for the sport, the better it is for the boxers.
"Sky have basically got a blank piece of paper, so we'll see where that goes. All I care about is what we do, and what we do at BT, which is deliver big fights. And for the last three years on the satellite stations, we delievered the highest ranking shows for the last three years running, so we've done a good job and will continue to do so. We've got some great fighters and really good youngsters coming through as well."#
