Mitchell Smith heads back to the ring to continue remarkable comeback
29-year-old Mitchell Smith (16-1, 9KO) will be back in the ring for a second time this year on July 23 at Woodside Leisure Centre in Watford.
The Priority Promotions event will see the former WBO Inter-Continental super-featherweight champion in the second fight of his incredible comeback, having spent five years away from professional boxing.
Last month, Mitchell Smith registered a ninth KO on his impressive 16-1 record on May 21 when he stopped 24-year-old Bulgarian Petar Aleksandrov in round five of six at Watford Leisure Centre.
It was five years ago when the talented prospect last fought in May 2017, which was when his promising career was derailed by problems encountered outside of the ring, resulting in a short stint in prison.
The 'Baby Faced Assassin' managed to regain his professional boxing licence in October 2020 but has had a big weight loss project to contend with.
Aged 18, Smith won the ABA Seniors, then became a Southern Area champion at just 20, and soon after collected the English strap along with WBO European and Inter-Continental belts, and a world ranking. Then came a wake up call against George Jupp in 2015, who came to their fight just one week before Christmas in the best shape and form of his career to register a unanimous decision victory to relieve Smith of his WBO regional title in a disastrious second defence.
He joined esteemed trainer Adam Booth after that and reeled off two routine wins, but his demons outside the ropes caught up with him and resulted in seven months spent in Her Majesty's pleasure. It was around the end of May 2015 when the Harrow man got involved in a fight in a local pub and was arrested for ABH with intent and affray.
After seven months within the infamous Wormwood Scrubs, Smith received a two-year suspended sentence plus 80 hours community service and probation. His pro boxing licence was also suspended by the British Board, as is custom in these cases.
The once troubled youngster is now a grown man who has learnt from his past experiences and even seeks counselling for his anger issues.
Previously signed to Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren, Mitchell is now guided by Mo Prior.
Training out of JABXING in Bushey with trainer Aaron Woodcock, Mitchell Smith has added strength and conditioning coach Neon Samuels to his team for this fight.
His opponent will be named shortly.
