Ex-pro Harry Woods had to undergo emergency surgery to save his leg
Former professional boxer Harry Woods (4-1) was involved in an horrific car accident on Monday, November 28, in Liverpool.
The 27-year-old was delivering parcels as part of his day job, which he first started during lockdown, when he was struck by a car while standing next to his delivery van and dragged along the road, severely damaging and breaking his leg. Doctors at Aintree Hospital were able to save the badly mangled limb, but had to be rushed into emergency surgery to take 3cm off the leg in order to salvage it.
Teammate Bradley Strand told BBN that his long road to recovery will take at least a year or more.
Woods reached 4-0 within his first year as a pro, operating at super-middleweight between 2019-2020. When the opportunity came to enter the BOXXER Series super-middleweight event in November 2020, held behind closed doors, the talented prospect jumped at the chance but was eliminated in the semi-finals by undefeated Mike McGoldrick.
As soon as news of his unfortunate accident spread, close friends and family rallied to his side. Close friend Jonathan Walsh immediately set up a GoFundMe page in an attempt to help Harry and his reliant family, who will now be incapacitated for several months while recovering from his injuries.
Adam said, "Harry's has been involved in a car accident, of no fault of his own, which has left him with a severe leg injury. He has had major surgery, which is still ongoing. Due to this, Harry is going to be off his feet for a while with his recovery and rehab, with a family to provide for still."
His former trainer, Paul Stevenson, guided Harry through his five-fight professional career, after an amateur career that saw him win 26 from 32 bouts, representing England and reaching ABA semi-finals.
Stevenson, who is the Head Coach at the historic Everton Red Triangle gym where WBC Silver featherweight champion Nick Ball and Olympian Peter McGrail train, wrote this emotional plea on Facebook earlier today, "Harry Woods is a real diamond. A former boxer, amateur and ERT pro, and now a coach at the ERT.
"He has a young family and works all hours as a courier whilst simultaneously working and studying to completing his training to become a paramedic.
"Anyone who know him will tell you he is one of the best souls in the world and a world full of people like him would be a great great place.
"Yesterday, Harry was hit in the street by a speeding car which nearly took his leg off. He was rushed straight into theatre where doctors just managed to save his leg though he is still on the major trauma ward and goes back into surgery on Thursday.
"Harry has a girl and young son to provide for and would probably hate me for making this public but he needs help.
"We have no idea how long his recovery is going to take but it’s likely to be at least 6-12 months before he can walk again let alone work to pay his bills.
"Meanwhile his young family have lost their income.
"His infant son needs food, nappies, a roof over his head etc etc etc, you know how hard it is.
"Please donate to the Go Fund Me page which Harry’s friend has set up in his name.
"Anything at all you can spare would make a massive difference.
"About an inch below the area where you enter the donation amount, there is a slide scale where you can set the 15% ‘tip’ which Gofundme charge to zero so that 100% of your kindness goes directly to Harry and his young family.
"Friends of mine, of Harry’s, of the ERT, and of the good guys of the world, please help Harry in his hour of need."
