Kash Farooq is hanging up his gloves due to 'unforeseen circumstances'
Bantamweight champion Kash Farooq (16-1, 6KOs) shocked the boxing world this week when a statement from St. Andrew's Sporting Club read: "It will come as a shock but due to unforeseen circumstances, we regret to announce that Kash Farooq is hanging up his gloves and retiring from professional boxing."
The events or reasons haven't yet been clarified, meaning it may be due to a personal or sensitive nature.
The statement continued to say: "We are truly honoured to have been given the privilege to guide the bantamweight through his career, from professional debut in October 2015 to his final fight last August.
"Unbeknownst at the time, but in August 2021, Kash would step through the ropes at Matchroom's 'Fight Camp' series for his last fight, producing an eye-catching shutout over Luis Castillo to win the WBC International bantamweight title.
"As a young teenager entering the boxing gym, the heights he has reached likely seemed unimaginable, through his incredible journey from dinner shows to 'Eddie's back garden', his story is the epitome of what is truly possible in this game with hard work and dedication."
It was also revealed that Pakistani-born Farooq would be staying on in the sport as a member of St. Andrew's Sporting Club backroom staff, "Kash Farooq has always been an integral part of the 'St. Andrew's Sporting Club' and that will continue, as we are delighted to announce he will be joining our background tam as our 'Head of Talent'."
During the Scot's six-year stellar career, he won Scottish Area; British (outright); WBA Continental; WBC International Silver and WBC International bantamweight titles.
'Untouchable' Ukashir ended his career ranked 13th with the World Boxing Council, in touching distance of a world title shot. The current WBC bantamweight champion is Filipino legend Nonito Donaire.
He was mandated for a British title shot against the only man to inflict a defeat in his career – Lee McGregor.
BBN would like to wish Kash and his family all the very best for the future.
