Jacob Robinson aims to follow in his father's footsteps
Jacob Robinson believes Angelo Dragone may struggle to cope with his power as the two men prepare to meet for the vacant Welsh Area featherweight title on tomorrow’s #MTKFightNight event.
They collide on the co-promotion between MTK Global and Mo Prior at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff on Friday, which is headlined by a showdown between Jay Harris and Hector Flores, and is broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.
It sees unbeaten Robinson (8-0, 2 KOs) challenge for the first title of his career, following im his father Steve's footsteps, and he believes he has more than it takes to overcome Dragone (5-2).
Robinson said: “It feels good to be back after almost two years out of the ring. I’m fighting for the same Welsh title that my dad won at featherweight so that’s extra motivation for me right there. It will mean the world to me to win, especially as it’s my first title shot.”
Known during his career as the 'Cinderella Man', Jacob's father Steve won the Welsh Area featherweight in July 1991, his first belt of his career, which saw him go on to win the WBO World featherweight title less than two years later in 1993, which he defended eight times, losing eventually to an up and coming Prince Naseem Hamed in 1995.
Jacob continued, “I’ve watched Angelo box and he’s a come forward fighter. So I’m expecting him to bring the pressure, but we will see whether he will be able to handle my power. He falls in a lot which can work well, as I’m a hard-hitting counter puncher.
“I’m hoping to be a lot more active starting with this fight on Friday, and if goes well in this fight then and I get the victory then being Welsh champion should put me right up there in the rankings.”
Elsewhere on Friday’s bill, Akeem Ennis Brown faces Daniel Alejandro Combi for the vacant WBC International super-lightweight title, plus some of the best Welsh talent will be on display, as Rashid Omar, Ethan George, Miles Gordon, Kryan Jones, Ben Crocker and Mano Lee are all in action.
