Ekow Essuman will face Tyrone Nurse in a maiden defence of his English welterweight title
Unbeaten Ekow ‘The Engine’ Essuman (9-0) returns to the Harvey Hadden Centre to headline once more in the maiden defence of his English crown to former British super-lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse (35-5-2).
Botswana-born Essuman makes another statement of intent as he defends his English welterweight title against the vastly experienced Nurse, who has won Central Area, English and British titles through his 10-year career.
As Nottingham's Essuman prepares for his 10th professional contest, 29-year-old Nurse will be entering the ring in what will be his 10th title contest.
The Huddersfield man first challenged for, and won, the English super-lightweight title way back in 2014. Prior to that, he won the Central Area strap with a win over the co-promoter of the event, Joe Elfidh. He went to add the coveted British title to his collection in 2015 and was a Prizefighter finalist in 2012.
Botswana-born Essuman sees his acid test against classy operator Nurse as a stepping stone to bigger domestic fights, namely with British welterweight champion Johnny Garton.
Nurse will be treating the fight as his comeback to contention following three straight losses to former victim Liam Taylor (19-1); Jack Brubaker (13-2-1) away from home in Sydney, Australia; and unbeaten Jack Catterall (18-0), conceding his Lonsdale belt in the process.
The Yorkshireman is unlucky to have had six British championship fights, yet still didn’t win the Lonsdale belt outright, as two of those defences ended in draws.
Home fighter and defending champion Essuman impressed against two-weight Midlands Area titlist Andy Keates (13-7-1) in his last fight, but this next match-up will be the true measuring stick for his talent and subsequent progression.
Elsewhere on the undercard, Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden (9-1) will be competing in his first 10-rounder in what is due to be a light-heavyweight title contest. The 24-year-old Newark man has regrouped since his close loss to Alistair Warren in 2016, reeling off six straight wins to find himself back in contention for titles. The six-footer was a decorated kickboxer before turning over to professional boxing and will now get his first chance at winning honours in his 11th contest.
Another Sugden appears on the same show, as Chad’s younger brother Regis Sugden makes his professional boxing debut having previously been a kickboxer and professional mixed martial artist competing on national shows run by the BAMMA outfit.
Another debutant makes his pro bow in the form of Kyle Hughes of Ilkeston.
Super-middleweight Dylan Clegg (2-0) looked impressive in his first couple of outings, stopping his first opponent and flooring his second. No doubt, he will be looking to continue that momentum in his third pro contest.
Midlands Area lightweight title contender Nathan Kirk (11-4) looks to bounce back with a win following a controversial defeat away from home in Bournemouth last December.
Unbeaten Jack Hutsby (1-0-1) enters into the second year of his professional boxing career looking to add another win to his record after experiencing a draw with Geraint Goodridge (2-5-1) in his last outing.
Omari Grant (7-0) takes part in another six-rounder, looking to land a Midlands Area title shot in 2019. Unbeaten Connor Parker (10-0) is the current Midlands super-lightweight titleholder.
Super-middleweight Jordan Ringham (1-0) defeated the experienced Lewis van Poetsch (7-82-1) in his debut last October and now returns to the same setting to continue his success.
The Scott Calow Boxing co-promotion with JE Promotions is set to be another stellar show as the winning pair kick off 2019 in style.
