Edgar Berlanga retains WBO NABO title against Jason Quigley
Edgar Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) stalked Jason Quigley (20-3, 14 KOs), knocked him down four times, landed his biggest blow but couldn't get rid of the pesky Irishman on Saturday night, June 24, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The first knockdown came in the third when he trapped Quigley in the corner to land a big left hook. A swiping left hook-straight right combo downed Quigley in the 12th, then the Puerto Rican went in for the kill. Under the relentless pressure, the Irishman took a knee without a punch landing, but the 32-year-old Ballybofey boxer managed to stick it out to the final bell.
Quigley started the fight brightly with his impressive speed and sjkill but it was a game of cat and mouse, with the New Yorker stalking him persistently all fight long. Quigley was on the backfoot throughout, as many expected him to be. He moved nicely, flicked out the jab and rolled out of a lot of trouble and showed off some slivk skills but he was never in with a shot of winning. He tried to fire back with big counters, but 'The Chosen One' was not troubled by anything. It's Quigley's third defeat but first time not being stopped.
Berlanga retained his WBO NABO belt with the unanimous decision and moved up to 21-0. Judges scorecards: Max DeLuca 116-108, Nicolas Esnault 118-106, Frank Lombardi 116-108.
