Eddie Hearn provides fresh details on the AJ vs Usyk rematch
The Matchroom Boxing promoter told BetFredTV: “This fight will happen and it looks like the middle to end of June”
This week, Hearn gave an update on the Joshua-Usyk rematch: “I think the fight’s going to happen. I’ve been backwards and forwards and this week we heard the news that [Oleksandr] Usyk has been given permission to leave the country and begin his training camp and now he begins that camp ahead of a June fight. AJ’s really happy.”
That information narrows the potential fight dates down to June 18th or 25th.
Their first match took place on September 25, 2021, which saw defending champion Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22KOs) outboxed and outpointed by the undefeated Ukrainian challenger Oleksandr Usyk (19-0, 13KOs) at the Tottenham Hotspurs FC stadium in north London. The second defeat of his career saw AJ lose his WBA Super, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles to the foreign southpaw and former undisputed cruiserweight champion.
AJ has since been training with a variety of different trainers, fueling rumours he will be leaving long-time coach Rob McCracken in favour of a fresh start.
Hearn continued: “He turned down a lot of money to step aside and then all of a sudden he wasn’t stepping aside and he wasn’t getting any money, so he’s probably quite relieved as this is the fight he wants. This fight will happen and it looks like the middle to end of June. We will be speaking to Alexander Krassyuk over the weekend and nailing down the location and the date. This almost certainly looks like it’s ready to go.”
