Conor Benn will be back in April
WBA Continental welterweight champion Conor Benn (20-0, 13KOs) next fight has been confirmed by promoter Eddie Hearn for April this year.
If 2021 is anything to go by, it's set to be another successful year for 'The Destroyer'. The 25-year-old fought in April last year, then again in September and December, with dominant wins over Samuel Vargas (TKO1), Adrian Granados (UD10) and Chris Algieri (KO4).
The undefeated prospect has solidified his positions as the UK's top welterweight, now ranked in all five world governing bodies: WBC #5 / WBA #5 / IBF #7 / WBO #11 / IBO #6.
There's plenty of champions to challenge in the 147lbs landscape, with Terence Crawford holding the WBO belt for over three-and-a-half-years now and his biggest rival Errol Spence Jr. in possession of the WBC and IBF titles. There's also WBA ruler Yordenis Ugas, who sent boxing legend Manny Pacquiao into retirement; as well as IBo titlist Daniyar Yeleussinov.
“He’ll be out in April and we’re just finalising his fight now,” said Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn when speaking to DAZN. “We’d love the [Adrien] Broner fight but we’ll have to see. I like Robert Guerrero, I like Maurice Hooker. I like all these kinds of fights because they give us names with profile and they’re the right tests.”
Not many expected the son of bBritish boxing legend Nigel Been to ever get so far in his career, but the youngster is surprising everyone with his vast improvements fight on fight. To become the top welterweight in the UK in just 20 fights has exceeded many expectations and fight fans are excited to see just how much further he can go.
Hearn added, “The backstory with Conor is better than you’ll ever get. He’s exciting. You never see him in a bad fight. I really believe that he’s a superstar in the making, and that’s why I’m so hellbent on getting it right. 2022 is the year when I think he should challenge for a world title. Two more fights and I think he’ll be ready.”
