Dillian Whyte discusses his British heavyweight rivals Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury
Dillian Whyte dismissed his heavyweight rival Tyson Fury even though he lost to the Morecombe man in April this year, “People say he’s fast and a great boxer but he’s not, he’s just a big guy.”
The Brixton 'Bodysnatcher' faces unbeaten American Jermaine Franklin this weekend, live on DAZN, at the OVO Arena, Wembley, but he has one eye on a future fight with former rival and promotional stablemate Anthony Joshua. The pair fought in a grudge match back in 2015, which AJ emerged victorious from with a seventh round KO.
Whyte went on to win 12 from his next 14 bouts, with losses to Povetkin and Fury, and now wants to line up another showdown with Joshua, who has lost three from his last five fights. Whyte said, “I’d love to fight Joshua another two or three times. Win, lose or draw, it would be a wild fight.”
Here's what the Buddy McGirt-trained heavyweight had to say in an interview with Betfred’s Lightweight Boxing Show:
Dillian Whyte on Tyson Fury:
“It isn’t. The fire keeps burning because combat sport is what gave me the buzz to change my life. It gave me the buzz to put the weapon down. Combat sport allowed me to change my life and to become a bigger, better man. It gave me a meaning, and to me that’s something really important.
“I still have time and I’m still young enough to correct the mistakes and stand in there and have a very good chance of being a world heavyweight champion. The Fury fight was a tricky one. I knew it was going to be a difficult fight because he’s just so big. People say he’s fast and a great boxer but he’s not, he’s just a big guy. In the fight he just pushed me over because he’s a strong guy. That’s because he’s so big because I’m not a guy that gets pushed around easily.”
Dillian Whyte on Anthony Joshua:
“This is heavyweight boxing, don’t look to the future but look to the present moment. I may beat Franklin, beat another guy and still not get a fight with Joshua. I’d love to fight Joshua another two or three times. Win, lose or draw, it would be a wild fight.”
Whyte vs Franklin
Sporting Index predict Dillian Whyte will make short work of opponent Jermaine Franklin on Saturday night, by forcing a stoppage in the eighth round.
‘The Body Snatcher’ is expected to wrap up victory within 24 minutes, to set up a potential rematch with Anthony Joshua.
Whyte is just 1/11 to win and 1/3 to do so by KO, TKO or technical decision, while his 21-fight undefeated opponent, Jermaine Franklin, is 7/1 to pull off a surprise victory.
Neville Burdock, Head of Sportsbook at Sporting Index, said: “Dillian Whyte needs a convincing victory tomorrow night if he is to get his bid for a heavyweight world title back on track, and that looks likely at an overwhelming 1/11 to win.
“We predict Whyte will leave Franklin on the canvas just before the end of the eighth round to set up a potential clash with Anthony Joshua.”
