Derry Mathews speaks out in interview with Switchbox TV
In a recent interview with Switchbox TV, former professional boxer Derry Mathews, revealed how he is keeping busy during the current lockdown and what the pandemic means for the future of boxing.
Mathews also shared words of admiration for the NHS staff and the families of those working on the frontline.
“They have been brilliant. I have said for years that they deserve footballer’s wages. They have done the country proud and the rest of the world proud. They are doing more than they should be doing for the wages they are on. Even the partners, living with someone who is working around the clock must be so hard”, he expressed.
Following his retirement in 2017, Mathews currently coaches at the Derry Mathews Boxing Academy, which is subsequently a member of team MTK.
During the interview he expressed how there is a need for coach marking and tougher licensing within boxing.
“It is stupid. Anyone can be a professional boxer now. Anyone can be a professional boxing coach. Half of them haven’t even put a pair of gloves on. You have to have been around boxing. I think the British Boxing Board might change a few things”, he stated.
Mathews also reminisced about his boxing career and those who were an integral part in his success. In particular, he had high praise for his former boxing coach, Danny Vaughan.
“I will always speak highly of Danny. He was like a brother to me. He brought everything to the table. He was a 110% coach”, Mathews added.
