Background
The Maidstone “Menace McCann”, just 22 still, has collected WBO Youth, WBC International Silver and Commonwealth titles during his last three bouts and now he aims to add a fourth in the form of the vacant WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title.
But he must go up against the tough and rugged “Il Capo” Baluta, 29 from Romania, who clinched his WBC International Silver belt last time out in March following a disputed decision victory over injured Andrew Cain in a captivating Telford shootout. Two of the Romanian's last three victories have come inside the famed walls of the historic York Hall, so he will be no stranger to the venue.
The home advantage for McCann won't mean anything on fight night, so expect fireworks in an even contest where the winner will be anyone's guess!
Quotes
Frank Warren: “This has got all the makings of a true York Hall cracker. For Dennis McCann, this could be a real coming-of-age fight against Ionut Baluta, who has fought and beat numerous top-level opponents.
“It will be a fourth title fight on the bounce for Dennis and, if he overcomes Baluta, he will quickly close in on world title contention.
“This will be a York Hall night not to be missed and probably the strongest card of 50-50 action staged at the famous old venue for many years.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Baluta is a live wire from first bell to the last and he has a lot more power than his record suggests. I had Andrew Cain winning in his last fight, but he got the result and it was another one of many, many upsets for the Spaniard on foreign soil. He can never be written off, he's an absolute nuisance and banana skin for any up and coming prospect, but I'm backing McCann to win on points in a very exciting, close contest.”
