Chesterfield light-welterweight debutant, Leon Field had a mice chat with us about his background before he takes to the professional stage for the first time in Rotherham on July 4th.
The 19-year-old is signed with Dennis Hobson Promotions and will be appearing on the same bill which will see unbeaten Sam Sheedy challenge Navid Mansouri for his English light-middleweight title.
Here's what he had to say...
What made you want to start boxing?
I wanted to start boxing because my father was a Thai boxer so he took me to my local boxing gym and I loved it.”
Who was your boxing hero growing up and why?
“Sugar Ray Leonard is my boxing hero, he was such a great classy boxer that could mix it up.”
How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do?
“I had my first fight at the age of 11 and unfortunately lost but then I won my next eight.”
How well did you do in the amateurs?
I did well in the amateurs reaching national finals and winning silver in the GB Tri-Nations.”
What made you decide to turn pro?
“I decided to turn pro as I had the right opportunities with the right people.”
What team do you have around you?
“I have the best team around me, my promotor Dennis Hobson is one of the best in the game, Chris Smedley and Steve Barnes, both top trainers, my father has always trained me as an amateur and has just applied for his pro license so hopefully will be joining my corner soon.”
What sort of fighting style do you have?
“I don’t really have a fighting style, I adapt to what my opponent is like but I prefer to box clever.”
What ambitions do you have for your pro career?
“I think every boxer’s ambition should be to be the best, it’s a hard enough game to do it for anything else.”
When is your first fight and who will be there in support?
“My pro debut is on the 4th of July at the Magna Centre, Rotherham. I’m feeling great leading up to it, in the shape of my life with a great team behind me.”
Any message for the fans?
“My message to the fans would be that with hard work I hope to give you many entertaining fights and thank you to anyone who has already bought tickets.”
