Meet Kane Stewart
Bristolian boxer Kane Stewart will make his induction into the paid ranks on September 12th, right at the start of the eagerly-awaited new season which promises fight fans some great domestic dust-ups such as the Anthony Joshua v Dillian Whyte showdown scheduled for December. The 22-year-old light-welterweight had a glittering amateur career and is now ready to make an impression on the pro game. We caught up with likeable pugilist to fire a few questions his way…
What made you want to start boxing? "My brother Dan started first, I used to go and watch and then it all started from there."
Who was your boxing hero growing up and why? "I loved watching Ricky Hatton, I used to stay up late and watch all his fights."
How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do? "I was 11 and I boxed a lad from Plymouth. Got the win by unanimous decision."
How well did you do in the amateurs? "I had 65 fights. I boxed for England in 2013, I won the Western Counties light-welterweight Elite Title three years on the spin, and thereby making history. I'm currently ranked six in England and 10 in the UK.
What made you decide to turn pro? "I wanted to turn over about a year ago but was talked into staying amateur for another year. I think I have a better style for the pros. I didn't like the three rounds!"
What team do you have around you? "I'm trained by Andy O'Kane. Also at the gym is the current English light-welterweight Champion Joe Hughes, IBO light-middleweight champion Danny Butler and also the ABA champion Sam Pomphrey."
What sort of fighting style do you have? "I like to switch and counter-punch but I'm also effective at putting the pressure on when needed."
What ambitions do you have for your pro career? "I believe if I can produce what I'm doing in the gym to the ring I will go all the way to the top!"
When is your first fight and who will be there in support?" "I will be making my pro debut on September the 12th at GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester."
Tell us something that not many people know about you? "I'm a chef and make amazing cakes, not too good when I'm making weight though!"
