Plymouth welterweight debutant, Darren Townley, gets his pro bow on the stacked Goodwin Promotion's show at York Hall this Saturday. The likeable 27-year-old starts off on a great card topped by Southern Area welterweight champion Johnny Garton (14-1) in a tantalising rematch with Martin Welsh (12-4-1) which will double up as an English welterweight championship eliminator. Here's what the Devonian had to say..   What made you want to start boxing? "I've always loved watching boxing so thought I would pop down to a boxing gym and give it a try, and after my first boxing session, I was hooked!" Who was your boxing hero growing up and why? "I have a few to be honest, I always loved watching Hatton, I loved watching Gatti fight, Amir Khan is always exciting and, of course, Floyd Mayweather. I could go on and on as there are so many top guys in the past and present that I love to watch." How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do? "After training for a while, I first stepped into a ring to compete at 17-years-old, where I won my amateur debut via a first round stoppage." How well did you do in the amateurs? "I am happy with what I achieved in the amateurs. I won a couple of area titles and beat some good, experienced kids along the way but really feel my boxing style is more suited to the pro game, and feel that is where I will shine." What made you decide to turn pro? "After speaking with Steve Goodwin and his team, I had the great opportunity to sign a three-year contract with them which I took with both hands, and I am 27 now so I feel this is the right time for me!" What team do you have around you? "I have a great team, obviously the Goodwin team who are fantastic and have their boxers as the number one priority unlike a lot of other managerial teams! I have Jack Green as my coach who is doing a great job with me and really progressing me through the transition from amateur to professional and also training a lot with my stable mate Jamie Speight who just boxed for the English title." Darren Townley with Floyd Mayweather Sr What sort of fighting style do you have? "I like to be aggressive and come forward but I also like to box. I can change it up if I need to, I feel I can adjust to who is in front of me in order to get the job done." What ambitions do you have for your pro career? "Like I said before, I just want to take it one step at a time, I have 110% focus on getting the win for my debut and then we will look at what's next, but I would love a few fights down the line to win an Area title and then see what happens from there." When is your first fight and who will be there in support? "My debut is on the 19th of September at the famous York Hall on a Goodwin promotions show. I am having great support within my home town in Plymouth with people making the long trip to London to watch the show and also other friends I have around the country. I really appreciate everybody who is coming to support." Tell us something that not many people know about you? I got 9 A*s in my GCSEs...just kidding lol! I enjoy challenges whatever it is - running events or tough-mudders. I love to compete and also it's good to compete in aid of charities sometimes as it's really rewarding when you raise a decent amount for a good charity. Also, people may not know I am really close to my family. I love to go and visit my nan and grandad a lot and see my little cousins but sometimes it's hard to find time with all the training commitments.
