Debut Corner with Charlie Shane
Middleweight debutant from Chatham, Kent makes his pro bow on the 10th weekend of the year at Medway Park in Gillingham on a JE Promotions show. The 24-year-old prospect, signed by former pro Joe Elfidh, is a slick southpaw with his sights firmly set on the coveted Lonsdale belt in the not too distant future. BBN caught up with the 'Animal' just a few weeks ahead of his professional debut in his Armoured Plated Boxing gym in Chatham, run by former Commonwealth, European and WBU World bantamweight champion, Johnny Armour.
Here's what he had to say:
What made you want to start boxing? “My granddad brought me up around boxing gyms. We used to watch all the local shows.”
Who was your boxing hero growing up and why? “Joe Calzaghe, he was the greatest boxing engine I’ve seen.”
How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do? “I was 12-years-old when I first boxed an I won by stoppage.”
How well did you do in the amateurs? “I done well as an amateur, I had 24 fights and won most of them.”
What made you decide to turn pro? “I’ve always trained like a professional and it’s something I’ve always seen myself being.”
What team do you have around you? “I have a really good team; Matt Simms is my trainer, I also have a strength and conditioning trainer, manager is Joe Elfidh, and my brothers always keep me motivated.”
What sort of fighting style do you have? “Right handed, southpaw, boxer-puncher style.”
What ambitions do you have for your pro career? “I’ve always had realistic goals in my head and to be British champion is my first goal.”
When is your first fight and who will be there in support? “My first fight is March 5th and I have a lot of local support, family and friends etc.”
What fight do you most want to see this year? “I want to see Billy Joe Saunders v Gennady Golovkin.”
If you could fight anyone, past or present, who would you choose? “I'd love to have fought Arturo Gatti! He's an absolute legend and I'd love to be in some of the wars he's been in.”
Tell us something not many people know about you? “I’m a really talented artist.”
