Background
European welterweight king David Avanesyan (28-3-1, 16KOs) takes on the unbeaten Finn Oskari Metz (15-0, 5KOs), in what will be a fifth defence of his EBU belt. The 33-year-old Russian trains with Carl Greaves in Newark. In 2016, 'Ava' defeated boxing legend 'Sugar' shane Mosley for the WBA Interim World welterweight title, which was upgraded to the full world title soon after. He lost in his first defence to Lamont Peterson and a further defeat looked to signal the end of the 147-pounder's career, but he has since won five European championship challenges in a row.
Oskari Metz, 30 from Helsinki, has won all 15 bouts since his pro career began in December 2016, but has not once competed in a championship bout. He has only ever been in two eight-rounders, so he is going to be really up against it here in his first fight in the UK.
Undercard Highlights
There's four more title fights on the bill, including three WBC International Silver contests. Yet it's Dennis McCann's bid for the WBO Youth bantamweight belt that will attract the most views on fight night. Dennis 'The Menace' will face Tanzanian southpaw Charles Tondon (12-4-2, 5KOs) in his first title bid.
Quotes
Avanesyan: "I am very happy to be fighting in front of my British fans at my favourite venue in Wembley where I had great nights in the past year," said Avenesyan, 28-3-1. "I promise I am back with real determination to put a big show on before a big fight.
"I am fit, I am ready and Metz is a good fighter and unbeaten, but I will win and win in style. I look forward to my debut under Frank Warren who I am grateful for getting me out on this show and look forward to performing for BT Sport and their fans. Enjoy the show I am back!"
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “David Avanesyan is a former world champion who is destined to challenge for another world title. This fight, in my opinion, is a huge mismatch!”
